MB memory slot repaired by using Liquid Wrench super penetrant oil

It was a last chance thing to try to salvage the defective ASUS MB made in 2010.

My symptoms were the PC would randomly freeze, even when in the bios, when tested with memtest, randomly fail or be ok in all 4 slots. This ASUS MB has a memok button, when booting up sometimes the led would stay lit, sometimes would be ok. Just today I noticed after I reinserted the DDR3 memory, it booted up no errors, where as moments earlier refused to boot and refused to reconfigure itself using the mem-ok button.

So made me think the MB memory slots were corroded or dirty, not making a good connection to the memory. I know the Liquid wrench is slightly acidic oil for cleaning rust away, so I soaked the memory module edge in some oil and worked it into and out of the slot about 5 times. Ever since the MB has worked without a problem. I treated all 4 slots.

Perhaps the metallic coating on the memory slot electric contacts wore off and got corroded. Maybe they were factory defects.

I was wrong, After working all day and into the night, which was very unusual, I awoke this am to a freeze. When it freezes whatever is on the screen is left there, mouse and keyboard unresponsive and I can not remote desktop into the PC.

Oil is not a good conductor of electricity in general and it also collects dust so I'd reckon you've probably now got an insulator between the memory edge connector and the slot.

If however, the particular oil you're using WAS a good conductor, you're shorting out the fingers so nae luck there either.

I used to use a hard eraser to clean the edge connectors on PC and memory board connectors, worked fine!
You can also use a glass fibre brush.

Play Bonny!

That oil is as thin as water.

I decided to flash the bios with next older version, I could barely get it done as the red dram light kept staying on.
So I got a succesful flash and it stayed on in the bios without a freeze. And no red dram light, but something is definitely been flaky with the dram and this MB.

I also set to disabled these 4 items

I downloaded prime95 for linux, and have been running mprime's torture test for several hours without a failure.
Code:
test@test-System-Product-Name ~ $ cd prime95
test@test-System-Product-Name ~/prime95 $ ls
libgmp.so libgmp.so.10.3.2 local.txt prime.txt stress.txt whatsnew.txt
libgmp.so.10 license.txt mprime readme.txt undoc.txt
test@test-System-Product-Name ~/prime95 $ ./mprime

Welcome to GIMPS, the hunt for huge prime numbers. You will be asked a
few simple questions and then the program will contact the primenet server
to get some work for your computer. Good luck!

Attention OVERCLOCKERS!! Mprime has gained a reputation as a useful
stress testing tool for people that enjoy pushing their hardware to the
limit. You are more than welcome to use this software for that purpose.
Please select the stress testing choice below to avoid interfering with
the PrimeNet server. Use the Options/Torture Test menu choice for your
stress tests. Also, read the stress.txt file.

If you want to both join GIMPS and run stress tests, then Join GIMPS and
answer the questions. After the server gets some work for you, stop
mprime, then run mprime -m and choose Options/Torture Test.

Choose a type of torture test to run.
1 = Small FFTs (maximum heat and FPU stress, data fits in L2 cache, RAM
not tested much).
2 = In-place large FFTs (maximum power consumption, some RAM tested).
3 = Blend (tests some of everything, lots of RAM tested).
11,12,13 = Allows you to fine tune the above three selections.
Blend is the default. NOTE: if you fail the blend test, but can pass the
small FFT test then your problem is likely bad memory or a bad memory
controller.

The usual chemical I was ever told to use was technical grade isopropyl alcohol or high purity water.

Some of those slots can run in two modes. Testing memory in pairs if they work that way may fail when testing single may not fail.

We still don't have any information where to look. Usual way then may be to swap known working parts.

Be sure to load bios fail safe or default if any setting may be set too high.

Yes, I have kept the bio settings at non overclocked settings.

I swapped lots of parts, 2 different types of memory, all gskill and geil. tried different PSU, different CPU, different GPU nvidia and amd.

It is still running prime right now without a fail.

I even thought of baking the board in the oven at 380* for 10 minutes.

It survived all night without a freeze and running mprime too without an error.
Maybe the bios file on the rom was corrupted, maybe that most recent bio ASUS lists is bad on their website.
ASUS had 7 or so bios files for this board listed, so maybe they had problems which they were constantly trying to fix.

I also use NOMachine to stay connected to the PC, so a quick glance tells me it is responding to the remote desktop so as I walk by, I can see it stayed up.

Results look very good, I will enter bios and set to default and run test again.

It was nice I could install an older bio over the newer bios, since this seems to have fixed the MB. Apparently not everyone can. Or the bios file on the chip was damaged.

Here are some other people who have had trouble with upgraded bios causing instability, I noticed one was getting red mem errors too.

If it gets thru a week without a problem, IMO, it is fixed.

Ran all night with mprime, no errors.
Then this am, I rebooted and it is dead again, memory issues.
Since the board was free, I may try the bake in oven idea. About 385*f for 8 minutes.
Since the board is worthless, it could only improve!

Will remove ROM and heatsinks. And need to support board on something like where the screws go.

I'd lower that temperature unless you want the parts to fall off. You won't be able to reflow solder like that usually. You can inspect the connections and look for cold or other damage better than this heat deal.

When they use solder paste they use it for top side usually. They then use a wave solder to attach the bottom parts and through hole.

I would wash the memory slots with a good detergent. Dry the board off. Then let it dry overnight. THEN, fold a piece of printer paper until it is the thickness of the memory slots. Drag the corner of the paper through each slot. Wipe the memory contact with 99% isopropyl alcohol.

Inspect the board carefully. Make any repairs necessary. THEN, try to put it back in service.

Just finished baking it.
I cleaned any oil out from the slots with a toothbrush and dish soap, rinsed well then let it dry in front of a heater fan.

I used the brass standoffs screwed to the MB, and put MB on an inverted perforated pizza sheet.
Set oven to 400*F and baked for 10 minutes. Last 2 minutes, I increased oven temp to 415.
I smelled nothing until about 7 minutes into the bake process. And the smell was minor. I put on a fan.
When done I turned off oven and opened the oven door to the first stop.
Will let it cool for 30 minutes, then test it!

I put the CPU in another PC and it has been working flawlessly, so it truly is the MB.

Will post back the results. Someone said on another forum who reflows boards, the new style solder might need 220*C to actually melt and suggested bumping temp up halfway through the baking!
This board was made in 2010, I do not know what type solder they used.

It's dead.
Lights come on, responds to power switch off and on, fans come on, but no post, no bios screen.
No keyboard or mouse lights.
So I think the heat cooked the bad component to death whatever it is.
So I can no dispose of the board, thankfully no more wondering what's going on with it.

I plan to use the B95 CPU in our media center PC, it is a lot better being a phenom II versus a phenom.
On that board, required a bios update to recognize amd3 cpu being it is an and2 board.

Well, it is not dead, I resurrected it this am.
It was refusing to post, mem led was continually off, it is supposed to light up momentarily at boot.
I hit the memok button, the led came on, surprised me. After several minutes, it then put up some text on the screen, saying no boot device.
I rebooted went into bios, it was all there.

I loaded the mint liveusb, it ran, but kept on randomly freezing same problem as before, baking did not fix that issue. Baking did not hurt it, but did make it lose something in that it refused to post until I pressed the memok button. Board ever since boots normally.

So, next idea, run the ddr3 1600mhz memory at 800 mhz. It has stayed solid, no freezing at all, (this am).

It is making me think this GSkill 4gb memory is an issue somehow when running at normal speeds. I also tried some Geil DDR 16000 memory and it also froze on that.

So interesting, anyone think any memory running at 1600mhz could function on this board at all? My memory modules are good quality, BUT not on the QVL list created by ASUS! This Gskill memory is on their own QVL for this board!!

Notice this guys comment about this board and memory??
http://forum.corsair.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92653

AND looking at manual, they have lots of DDR3 running at 1.65v or higher even, I never tried raising the dram volts that high.

Adding more info,
Died again, now refuses to post.
I started wondering if the CPU socket was defective, since the memory controller is in the CPU. And there is a disconnect between cpu and ddr, look at all the memory issues I had with this board..
I took off the sliding lock cover, and there are corroded pins!
So something spilled into the socket. Tried cleaning them but it is no go.

ALSO, this is second ASUS board I have troubles with, never getting one again. AND the memok button is a kluge idea, the dumb thing, Phenom II cpu only supports 1333mhz memory officially, yet when board is set to AUTO, ASUS clocks DDR3-1600 in to a 1600 mhz setting, but that may not work with a phenom II cpu, it is iffy. Yet AUTO is what most people would use AND ASUS advertises this board is specially designed to work with DDR3-1600, yeah right. When it worked, it was only stable setting memory to 800mhz, so glad it is dead.
I marked solved, as I am pretty sure that CPU socket was the culprit for all the problems.

Notice Phenom II AMD specs for speed. Have to go to FX series to get faster speeds. ALSO, IMO, the board is too old technology, too many years, and I think it is so easy for people simply pass on their defective tech to unsuspecting buyers.

I plan to keep the board for spare parts, has lots of solid state caps.
