maximum number of HDs

yet again I have a wierd problem here is the setup:

fedora core1, kernel 2.4.22-1.2115
originally 4 HDs were connected to IDE RAID (no mirroring & etc, just 4 purpose of spare plugs + 3 HDs were connected to normal ide channels.
added another HD to the last available slot of the secondary slave ide. It appears fine in bios along with all other, so total = 8 hds.
going to hardware browser in RH shows me only 7 HDs
hd a b c d e f g, & no h !

is this a limitation of some sort? what else can I check?

PLEASE HELP !

PS The most wierd thing of em all was that on power down i see my hdh in the list of HD's being shut down !!!

nomount

u can not mount hardware that is not fully recognized by kudzu can you ?!?!?!?!

in any way i was doing some more inspections & noticed a crash recorded in kernel boot log, exactly @ the point where this bloody new hd was loaded. I tried troubleshooting with little to no effect, eventually recompiled kernel & everything seems fine now (except tha fact that now apm/acpi doesn't quite function correctly but thats a whole other story as i had similair problem b4 so i will fix that as well some day.
