master/slave vs cable select

On IDE devices, is there any reason to prefer cable select jumper settings over master/slave? I'm supposing there must be, or why would cable select exist?

Back in like, 1843 there was. IDE controllers automatically detect that sort of thing now. Not actually that long ago, but my point is that it is a dated and wildly obsolescent feature. There shalln't be any performance gains or cool stuff like that from changing it. In fact, you'll just waste some time.

It really depends upon how old your computer is. In order for cable select to work you need to have an 80 conductor cable. Older 40 conductor cables will not work with cable select. Some motherboard manufacturers shipped a CD/DVD IDE cable with only 40 conductors.

Other than that one caveat there is no real difference in performance between the master/slave and cable select choices.
