Manual nvidia install needs kernel source, unable to select source in YOU

I did a security update on my box with suse 10.0 and made sure not to select the kernel so to avoid having to update the driver. I found after the update there is no 3-d. I could not find the nvidia driver in YOU, so I downloaded the driver for the geforce 6200. The install complained about the kernel source. I then went to update the kernel and kernel source as was explained in another thread and found the kernel source check box to be grayed out and will not change to a check mark. In YOU, I have the following checked:
the linux kernel kernel-default
kernel-default-nongpl

I can not check mark: kernel-source
It needs the kernel souce to compile the driver. Also, does nvidia continue to do installs thru YOU?

you can install kernel-devel and kernel-headers.that's should be enough to install the nvidia.if you are installing nvidia manually,do (sh nvidia-1.0.sh) as root

I was able to install the kernel sources, then that let me do an update. I was able to run the installer, but sax2 gave errors and I have no desktop. If I was using the wrong driver, since I can still log in in text mode, can I copy the driver and install it again or did I damage the kernel? Is there a way to figure out why sax2 gave errors?
