Most of the time when you have a modem, you have a "software" modem, i.e. there are accential components missing on the modem, and they are replaced by software emulation. These modems are called "winmodems". You need drivers to get them working and most of the time, there are only windows drivers. On the site I just gave you, there might be linux drivers for your modem.
But if you have a real modem (i.e. one with all the components on the modem), you don't need drivers.
