Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Mandrake 9 can't find parallel port printer

I recently installed Mandrake 9 on a new machine as a dual boot between Win98 and Mandrake. But Mandrake has never been able to detect the presence of my HP LaserJet IIIP, non-postscript printer. Mandrake 8.2 had no problem with it, and Win 98 is printing fine, so I don't think the printer is the problem.

My printer admin skills are limited to printerdrake, which tells me there is no active printer connected to my system. Is there something else I can check and/or modify to help 9.0 recognize the printer?

My new computer has an Asus A7N8X board with the nforce2 processor. I thought that might be the problem so I downloaded nvidia's latest driver for it, but that didn't make any change.

Thanks for any help.
