Ok.... maybe I didn't set the permissions properly, but I went through and set all directories and files with:

chmod a+rw

I'm still getting a stuck pcm volume.

BTW: Thanx Aussie for your input.

Alex

PS: kmix is still giving me the "kmix: Mixer cannot be found." Message when run from root.

zansatsu being my user name.

Just so I know, what are you looking for with this command?

Bingo!
You should see something like this,
Code:
ern@beast bern $ ll /dev/mixer*
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            6 Feb  3 17:33 /dev/mixer -> mixer0
crw-rw-rw-    1 root     sys       14,   0 Aug 29  2003 /dev/mixer0
crw-rw-rw-    1 root     sys       14,  16 Aug 29  2003 /dev/mixer1
crw-rw-rw-    1 root     sys       14,  32 Aug 29  2003 /dev/mixer2
crw-rw-rw-    1 root     sys       14,  48 Aug 29  2003 /dev/mixer3
bern@beast bern $
Do 'chmod 666' on the devices.

have u fixed that last line, spurious interrupt: irq 7

when my network goes down ( i use acpi and alsa also), 3com Vortex/Boomerang in inspiron 8200 and xircom parent (ethernet and modem, configured but not used) inserted in cardbus/pcmcia adapter i get that error. without the xircom inserted, no prob...

heard its related to printer stuff, the message occurs directly after the parallel printer module...hmmmmmmmm

maybe not of much help but try it out, i get ratchety sound sometimes also

have u tried amixer --help to try to set the volumes
volumes muted by default, may work in x, but not in console...that was my experience

Aussie: Ok my ls looks like yours now:
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 11 Mar 24 12:53 /dev/mixer -> /dev/mixer0
crw-rw-rw- 1 zansatsu audio 14, 0 Mar 24 12:53 /dev/mixer0
crw-rw-rw- 1 zansatsu audio 14, 16 Mar 24 12:53 /dev/mixer1
crw-rw-rw- 1 zansatsu audio 14, 32 Mar 24 12:53 /dev/mixer2
crw-rw-rw- 1 zansatsu audio 14, 48 Mar 24 12:53 /dev/mixer3

Although the "lr-xr-xr-x" still seems to be missing the "w"s (I assume this means write permissions). I used chmod 666 and it changed everything else. Kmix still gives me the error and my pcm volume is still stuck and won't budge. Maybe there are more permissions that need to be changed?

Alex

BTW: Outabux: I've never had to worry about the spurious IRQ 7. It doesn't seem to effect printing or networking for me. amixer has also failed me. lol

That all looks ok, now check if your user is part of the 'audio' group, and post the output of "lspci -vv"that mentions your Multimedia audio controller.

KDE has KUser for adjusting/adding users, both it and lspci have to be run as root, KUser will prompt you for the root password when you run it, but lspci has to be done in the console as root, eg;
Code:
bern@beast bern $ su -c 'lspci -vv'
Password:
