mandrake 9.2 fails to shutdown and lockups
Hi, i recently installed mandrake 9.2. The problem is my laptop fails to shutdown every time with mdk. I thought it had something to do with the cpu's power management features so I disabled it on the BIOS but it still didn't work. Also whenever i disconnect the ac to work with a battery (or connect it when the battery runs out) the computer locks up completely. Anyone else with similar problems?

Everyone I've heard has the plug/unplug power lock-up that you've mentioned. I've heard rumors of a fix, but no proof of that yet.
Mandrake 9.2 will shutdown my Inspiron 8200 just to the point of power off... but still hogging power unless I physically poweroff with the button.

oh well I guess I'll just have to wait for a fix then. By the way I've tried GDM and XDM (and whichever is on by defaul) and they all do the same.

... I think i solve it... I've reinstalled few times from scratch, using Xfree without 3d acceleration, and now i don't have problems shutting down. I have Radeon 7000.

If your machine freezes in the last step of powerdown (actually turning off!), try switchig to ACPI from APM.

hi there,
sounds really like a problem with the hw acceleration. iīve heard that before, and mandrake 9.2 didnīt want to accept hw accel on my workstation, too.
think itīs worth a try!
best,

beyond those problems, mandrake erased already installed programmes when installing new ones. but its really beautiful!

Yep... I can't decide what to do. Change the card or wait for solution.

as this is not the only distro that refuses to work with my hardware, i changed over to suse 8.2. suseīs really great and supports everything on my pc.
though iīve got only some standard hardware, other distros donīt support the graphics (redhat, mandrake), the cd-burner (earlier suse, again mandrake), scanner, mouse or even kick me out of installation (redhat).
it is the question what you want to do with your hardware acceleration and if you need it that urgent. if you can proceed without it, iīd stay with mandrake. if you donīt want to miss it as you canīt proceed certain games and stuff, iīd change the distro.
try suse, at best version 9.0 as much people say itīs fantastic. i didnīt check it out yet as there is no image to download right now, but i swear i will as soon as it is available!

no, i didnīt. i changed the distro as i couldnīt believe it ...
slackware is great, too. itīs not so pretty like mandrake is, but i learned much more than with any other distribution. it doesnīt make everything automatically and asks you some questions, starting with which kernel you want to use.
slackware is fun and you get a much more closer view into linux than with the comfortable distros such as mandrake, suse, or redhat.
if you shouldnīt come along with the partitioning programmes of slackware: donīt worry, fdisk is your friend! (DOS version, easily achieved through a boot with a w98-bootdisk even when no DOS installed)
let me know,
