Mandrake 9.1 won't install RedHat 9 will
I have just upgraded my fave box to an ABIT NF7-S, dual 512MB DDR, Athlon 1800+XP overclocked to 2600+ (guaranteed) and a Radeon 9700 Pro. Rest of my kit is two or three linux installations old and has always worked.
I'm new here but I have a small network at home (dedicated Smoothwall firewall box, SAMBA file/print server, laptop and three desktops all networked together) and have played with linux since Minix days. I run Mandrake on my personal desktop box by preference and tend to use RedHat on my servers cos I have RedHat books on such things! I wanted to upgrade to Mdk9.1 but it will not install on my new system.
I get the splash screen and can use F1 and F2 to access the help screens but when I finally press enter the computer locks up and the number lock and caps lock LED's flash in unison on my keyboard. The only way out is the reset button.
I have tried installing direct from Linux Format magazine's issue 41 cover DVD; downloading the iso's from the net; making fresh CD's from the aforementioned cover DVD; making a boot floppy ditto and de-tuning the setting sin my BIOS back to 1800+ norms but the same thing happens in each case - splash screen and then blinking LED's.
The galling thing is that RedHat 9 installs without a hitch. Any ideas?
Mike

Same problem
I've got the exact same problem here the only thing we share in common is the athlon 1800xp+ processor. I'm trying to get into the linux world but this hanging error after hte splash screen is hindering my plans.

Gee thanks rodthagodx! Where do we go from here? As I say, RedHat 9 installs without a problem - you might want to try that. BTW is yours a natural 1800xp? Thats what I was using before and never had a problem with it. I got this new guaranrteed 2600 one from Overclockers UK for about 60 notes - in my home town so that was easy (go to www.overclockers.co.uk)

Did you check their site for any errata or install "gotchas", especially their hardware compatability list? There may be a work-around.
I have heard that some progs have problems with overclocking, so you may want to set the speed back for install.

You didn't install the developmental packages? As root, command:
