Mandrake 9.1 made my computer crap out...

When I had Windows 2000 installed, my computer was pretty good... I could get most new games to work, and have sound. Things were good.

I downloaded Mandrake Linux 9.1 a few days ago, and everything sucks. First off my sound is completely gone. Nothing has made a noise since I got this, and there isn't even a sound card listed in the HardDrake thing. I'm not exactly sure which sound card I have, but I do know that it's really old. Sound Blaster 16 or something...

I haven't tried many games, but every one of the 3d games included with it run at a crawl. (In fact, in "ArmageTron" it says it's 1 fps) It's really irritating, as I was under the impression that Linux was supposed to work with old hardware... Is there anything I can do to fix this, or should I just switch back to Windows?

Oh, and in case it matters, I have an Intel Pentium 2 processor, ATI Rage 128 graphics card, 128 mb RAM, and like I said no idea about my sound card.

Hello,
I will be able to see what sound card your computer has if you issue $ less /proc/pci. You can configure sound in the Mandrake Control Center (they make it so easy).
About your video card, I believe it is fully supported by any XFree release, maybe you just chose the wrong driver...
Well, you can give us more information so that we are able to provide additional help. Bye

Hi there. I have an SB16PCI sound card and it works great under Mandrake 9.1, I think Creative were in the LXF awards for best hardware support, but if it's an ISA card (very, very, very old) then setting it up is gonna be difficault however good the drivers are.

Your 3D is s-l-o-w because unless you installed the correct drivers for your video card then all rendering work is done by the CPU using a GL compatible software renderer called MESA.

I believe ATI have proper LINUX drivers for the rage 128, but I have had no expirience in setting up ATI cards. (I have an NVIDIA card, and installing NVIDIA drivers for linux is actually easier than in windoze)
