For some silly reason the audio is muted in both Aumix and Kmix in Mandrake 9.1. Go to Control Center, like start in windows, then Multimedia/Sound then those two mixers. Unmute the sound adjust the volume and it should work.
Why Mandrake did this I don't know. I guess we all do something silly on occasion.
If that don't work, post and we'll find something else to beat on it with.
How could you tell that they weren't muted? Just because the sliders are up, doesn't mean the sound is not muted. If you're using KDE, you need to see a speaker icon in the system tray without a cross on it. See here for more info:
When I use kmix there isn't a cross in the speaker icon.
Also in the touble shoot section in harddrake it said type in a command that will tell you the status of the mixer, I forget the exact command but all my volumes were up and not muted. (It may have been just catting a file in the /proc file system rather than a command, but as I said I forget and I can't check because I'm on XP now.)
I'm now *fairly* sure this isn't a stupid mistake on my part.
The sound is definitely not muted then. Try setting the sliders a little bit below the top setting, ie, at 99%. When I do that in KMix, particularly with the master volume, I get a large increase in volume.
