mandrake 9.1 cant see my speedtouch

i have got a usb speedtouch adsl modem for use with my mandrake distro and configured it according to the instructions.

i have downloaded the microcode and put it in /usr/share/speedtouch

however i am stil unable to estabish a connection

i ran the command cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

to see if mandrake can see my alcatel modem but no mention of it is listed anywere

my scanner works fine in my usb port

how can i get mandrake to see my speedtouch? as this is the only thing why it wont run as it isnt being detected.

the rest of the set up is fine

please can someone help me

i will even PAY for the help as i can get my dial up to work and the only thing stopping me binning windows altogether is getting my adsl to work
