Mandrake 9.1 and ALSA

I did a fresh install of Mandrake 9.1 and before, I could get sound no problem but this time, when ALSA loads on bootup, i hear a whining noise (feedback maybe?) and it doesn't go away. I have a Santa Cruz soundcard. Can anyone suggest anything please? I used to get sound on this thing beautifully (except for the 2 channel only limitation with ALSA) so I know I'm doing something wrong...this is off a fresh isntall of MDK9.1--anyone please?

I almost forgot

When i try to play any sound, i get nothing. The feedback noise goes away when i mute everything in aumix. Based on some testing i did, when PCM is > 0, the feedback starts but it's okay when the PCM seetting is at 0 (which is kind of pointless)
