Are you using xf86config to do configuration, or are you editing XF86Config by hand?
What error messages do you get when you try to run X? What does /var/log/XFree86.0.log say?

Im getting the same problem with my system...
OK-
Ive installed Mandrake 9.0 on 2 machines before with no problem.
They were both running Windows XP Pro. The dual boot installation went fine.
The machine that Im installing it on, is a new Microtel PC, with Lindows 3.0, AMD Duron 1.1 Ghz, and on board video and audio cards.
When I booted off of the CD, I receieved no error messages.
I went through all the steps, until I got to configuring the
X Server. The monitor it finds no problem....( NEC ),
its the video card thats failing. The motherboard has a built in 8mb of video memory.
When it defaults to 'Vesa' type, I try and test the screen, and get the error message '(EE) no EE screens found'??
Ive checked my limited documentation of what came with the PC,
and all I can come up with is that its a TRITON motherboard, with on-board audio and video.
**If I go through the installation, when it boots up, I get the login prompt. I can log in as the root.....and can see directory information....but cant get the GUI working?
We're not the first to have this problem......
Anyone have any ideas?

Do you mind posting the whole XF86Free config file, XF86Free-4 config file, and your XF86Free logs. Also try typing lspci and see what Mandrake comes up with.

I solve my problem, using 16 bit color with Xfree4. Now the problem is that the monitor configuration says 1024x768 but it looks like 640x480.
