I have just installed Mandrake 8.2 and everything went well until I tried to use dial-up networking via kppp. It insisted that it could not find /dev/modem. (never had this problem with Mandrake 8.1 which worked perfectly!)
I have a US Robotics V90/56K ISA internal modem with jumpers set for COM2/IRQ3.
I tried the "setserial" command but Mandrake insists it cannot find it.
Mdk Control Centre shows the presence of a modem in the list of hardware devices but when you click on "modem" no information appears on the right hand side of the screen.
I had exactly the same problem with my ISA soundcard (AWE32) and the Mdk Control Centre was of no use in setting up the card. I had to open up a terminal window as SU and use 'sndconfig' to get it going.
Is there a similar modem configuration tool I can use?
(I know the modem is definitely ISA as I fitted it myself)
Not sure about Kudzu (whatever that is!) I will have a look for it. I am having to access this board with Win98 until the problem is fixed. A very good reason to get it fixed!!
ISA cards can be a problem, can't they! Have you tried to detect/configure the modem via Control Centre - if memory serves it's under Tools....? Has it been assigned an IRQ yet?
Kudzu is similar to Windo$e Setup - it can run at startup and detect any 'new' hardware - if it does it'll give you various options and (hopefully) configure the various files for you.
If you look under System > Services in C. Centre it'll show if its loading.
When I first started in Linux, I had so much aggro with ISA cards that I swore I'd never use 'em again
I used the detect/configure option for the modem in Control Centre Tools and it worked!! In fact I am now using Mozilla to respond to your last post. (BTW Kudzu was running)
Thanks for your help.
The only other problem I have with Mandrake 8.2 is that my M$ wheel mouse is not working properly. (again I never had this problem with Mandrake 8.1) I set up the mouse as a generic PS/2 wheel mouse and it tested okay during installation but the scrolling wheel just will not work in Mandrake 8.2
click on Control Center
enter root password
click on Hardware
click on Hardware List
click on Modem
click on Tools (on menu bar directly above window)
click on ISDN Adapters
select "auto detection" and click on next
make sure "normal modem connection" is selected with the little square button depressed
click on next and then okay
choose correct COM port for your modem (usually COM2 for ISA modems)
click on next
flii out details on Form and then test by connecting to internet
Yeah that's exactly what I did with mine the same USRobatics ISA modem I couldn't get it to work across many platforms starting from RH6 up untill MK8.2, and this method I found by pocking around, unfortunatelly I gave it to my friend who fried it in first day when he decided to make some mods to the modem board.
In fact I got the mouse working by reconfiguring it via the Control Center. When I checked (for some reason unknown to me) the Mandrake Installer had set me up with a standard 2 button PS/2 mouse even though I do remember choosing and testing the PS/2 wheel mouse during installation!
