Mandrake 10 RAM detection issue

Hello,

I installed Mandrake 10 a few months ago.

I do a fair bit of audio processing, use the low latency kernel patch, I had been using 512MB of RAM, but found that I just needed more. Upgraded to 2GB.

For some reason, Mandrake is only seeing 1GB.

BIOS and GRUB both see the full 2GB (evidenced at boot). Tried Knoppix - it also sees the full 2GB.

Made and booted memtest86 bootable CD - no reportable issues.

I've tried passing the mem=2067MB (and several variations) to the boot command in GRUB. The system configuration utility within the Mandrake is also configured to pass this attribute. But still never changes what Mandrake reports w/ the 'free' command.

From what I sense, it could be one of two issues:

1) free is just misreporting the memory available (not sure if this is possible)
2) there is an inherent limitation in the kernel.

But, I'm unsuccessful in finding documentation to support my assumptions.

Don't really want to upgrade, as I have a ton of audio processing software already built into this Mandrake ...

Any ideas ...?

Thanks
Caleb

You need to know if Mandrake10 kernel config has support for HIMEM 4G memory. Check with their forum if kernel upgrade rpm pkg will fix it. Good luck.

That was it.

Well, looking back, that seemed simple!

Enabling HIGHMEM 4GB in the kernel config, recompiling, and reinstalling the kernel worked.

Many thanks for the tip.
