Here's my tech info:

I love it when i answer my own questions!
i started my linux in the previous kernel version and saw as it was loading:
running alsactl to restore previous settings (or something like that?)

so i restarted again in 2.6.10 (my newest kernel version where audio wasn't working) and i ran the following:
$ alsactl restore

then the audio started up right away and works fine! it does seem a tad bit echoey but i'm not sure if it was like that before or not...but its better than nothing!

hate to be too simplistic... but you have tried alsamixer right?
your pc speakers could easily be muted still while your headphones are unmuted.
