Managing multiple screens: redirecting video output and switching between screens

Hello!

I would like someone to explain to me (and everybody) how to configure X in order to:
- be able to redirect video output to a specific monitor (e.g. computer screen, TV, projector, and so on..),
- be able to switch between these monitors (using, when available and if possible, the FN keys found on some laptops' keyboards).

Thanks for your help!

I found a partial solution here: http://linux.die.net/man/4/radeon (for ATI cards)

If you look at the X-Windows manual, there are settings to put in xorg.conf for dual monitors and Xinerama. The only way it worked for me, however, was with the ATI radeon settings.

I have not found how to make laptop function keys work.

One thing I just stumbled across: OpenSUSE 10.3 has a GUI control panel for setting up multiple monitors---first time I have seen this on any distro.

Maybe I chose a bad title for this thread. I'm not really interested in using two monitors simultaneously; what I would like to do is be able to use my TV as a monitor, e.g. to play games, watch film, etc.
If I start X (with KDE) and the PC is connected to my TV, I manage to have my screen shown on the TV, but I'm limited to a 1024x768 resolution.
I've read 'man xorg.conf', but I couldn't get X to output to my Tv. I've added some basic "Device", "Monitor" and "Screen" sections (where the only reference to the fact that I was writing about a TV monitor was TvOutput = PAL), but it didn't work.
What I think I need to know is:
- what do I have to add to xorg.conf in order to let X know about the fact that there is a TV to which I might want to send the PC's video output.
- how do I tell X to redirect video output to either the PC's monitor or the television or both.

Thanks for you help!

p.s. i'm using ATI fglrx proprietary drivers.
