Maginon Scanner with/without Image Scan Tool

This Maginon FS500 slide/35mm scanner is not recognised by Linux Simple Scan and when I run the Image Scan Tool software that came with it under Wine, that doesn't see the scanner either. I have found that Cheese Webcam Booth sees it as a USB 2.0 device, but the image quality is low. It looks as though I need to use webcam or video software, I can't find it using VLC - any recommendations?

I guess the first part may be to know model of scanner, also exactly how the OS views the device. Since cheese works we have to assume it might tell us what is using.

My ex had a higher end Minolta that took a lot of work to configure the scan to be in the resolution I wanted. I assume yours is defaulting to a low resolution or quick scan.

Too true, info added to first post.

The resolution field says 592 x 392 which is 232 064 or 1/4Mp whereas the scanner says it is 5Mp. I can't change it.

Not sure of state on this by using wine. For some reason I thought there was some usb support in wine.

It will not passthrough from host as such.

There should be a way to get more information on why cheese views it. The menu and settings may be a pull down upper left.

Gimp may work.

scanimage may work.

Xsane may work.

The best part of all this is that you know it can work.

Film scanners usually don't work in Linux. There are a few expensive ones that do work, because they are straight SCSI. USB film and slide scanners many times a USB<>SCSI conversion in the driver, which is quite difficult to reverse engineer and put into a Linux driver.

Wine forum won't even allow me to post a message (it's off-topic - no explanation why). I'm getting further without Wine now anyway

Very few of these, all of which I've tried

None do, I think it's because they are designed for "Sane" devices and this scanner isn't.

True, it's a major step forward, all I need to do is identify the appropriate software, which I think is not "Sane" scanner software but camera or video software.

Since this is now clearly a software problem I will continue this question on the 'Software' forum.

I eventually tried this on Windows7 and the file size was only 1/2MB so I concluded that it was a crap scanner and gave it away

Hi everyone, I'm having the same trouble with a similar device apparently ( negative scanner Silvercrest, SND 3600 D2)

I was wondering if Chris you find a solution? I can't find your post in the "software" section.

Any help would be welcome! Thanks!

I posted it here https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/software-for-maginon-fs500-slide-35mm-scanner-4175610802/http://

My Maginon FS500 slide/35mm scanner is not recognised by scanner software, I assume this is because it is not a "Sane" device. In fact it isn't really a scanner, it doesn't scan! It has a 5Mp camera, which may be why Cheese Webcam Booth can see it as a USB 2.0 device. Unfortunately the image quality is only about 1/4Mp and the setting is fixed.

It looks as though I need to use webcam or video software that works in a similar way to Cheese, I have tried a few without success - any recommendations?
There were no helpful answers, just a statement that there isn't any good Linux software for this type of scanner. As mentioned in my previous post #7, it was poor in Windows too - I gave up and gave it away. You can get this type of slide scanner which scans to an SD card which avoids the problem.
