LXDE monitor resolution detection

How does LXDE (or underlying stack on Debian 9) determine what resolution(s) a monitor can handle?
I have two Philips 288P 4K monitors and apart from one was made late 2014 and the other early 2016 (and bought later) they are allegedly same model but when connecting to HDMI on same laptop (one at a time) using same cable one of them shows 4K the other only has max of 1920x1080 available. What could cause that and could it be possible to override somehow. This is more out of curiosity since I can only use one at time with this laptop anyway. Some data below

1920x1080i 60.00 50.00 59.94

Number 2

Both seem to repond identically apart from Number 1 says made late 2014 and Number 2 says early 2016

Which of the two is misbehaving?

Can the monitors' own controls/settings be made to display a firmware version? The older could possibly have been manufactured without incorporating HDMI 2.0 for 3840x2160@60Hz. Maybe contacting Philips is in order here.

EDID...

Your problem may be that your laptops graphics card doesn't recognize your older monitor by an EDID that allows it to connect at the 4K resolution. You may have to edit the file that sets the resolution to achieve 4K on a permanent basis. For my Suse 15.1 with KDE it's /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-monitor.conf.

The Arch wiki has a post, xrandr, that gives more information; you might profit by following any links.

However, this solution assumes that both monitors have identical specifications as to connection standards and the problem isn't one of hardware. You might check P/N, etc.
