Lucent Microelectronics 56k Winmodem on Suse 9.1

Hey Everybody,
Ok, here is my problem... I just installed Suse 9.1... I have been trying multiple versions of Linux including slackware 10.0, mandrake 10.0, and now I am on to Suse... but that’s besides the point. I need to get some drivers for my Lucent Microelectronics 56k Winmodem (rev 01). In windows it is under Com 4. I downloaded ltmodem, because Suse 9.1 personal doesn’t come with the ltmodem package. I downloaded that, and went to configure my modem, and I set up my ISP and phone number, ECT. According to Suse, my modem is located at /dev/ttyLT0. And so when I configured my modem with Yast, and I dialup using KInternet, the logs show this:

SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.16 on linux.
Status is: disconnected
trying to connect to smpppd
connect to smpppd
Status is: disconnected
Status is: connecting
pppd[0]: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.
pppd[0]: Failed to open /dev/ttyLT0: No such device or address
Status is: disconnected
pppd[0] died: Serial port open failed (exit code 7)

Since it says no such device or address, I thought maybe I was supposed to put the letter O where I put the number 0. And I got this in the logs:

SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.16 on linux.
Status is: disconnected
trying to connect to smpppd
connect to smpppd
Status is: disconnected
Status is: connecting
Status is: disconnected
pppd[0] died: pppd options error (exit code 2)

And since that one didnt work, I decided to try all of the other ports, like in this example of /dev/ttyS1:

SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.16 on linux.
Status is: disconnected
trying to connect to smpppd
connect to smpppd
Status is: disconnected
Status is: connecting
pppd[0]: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.
pppd[0]: Removed stale lock on ttyS1 (pid 3889)
pppd[0]: --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0
pppd[0]: --> Initializing modem.
pppd[0]: --> Sending: ATZ
pppd[0]: --> Sending: ATQ0
pppd[0]: --> Re-Sending: ATZ
pppd[0]: --> Modem not responding.
pppd[0]: Connect script failed
Status is: disconnected
pppd[0] died: Connect script failed (exit code 8)

All of the other ports gave similar answers, with the exception of changing from ttyS1 ro ttyS2, ect. I also downloaded scanModem, and I got the results of:

UPDATE=2004_Dec_18
ONLY use scanModem downloaded as: http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz
TMPM=/dev/shm/0tmpfile

./scanModem should ONLY be run within a Linux/UNIX partition.
If within a MicroSoft/DOS partition, abort with Ctrl-C now !!!
Copy scanModem.gz to your Linux partition and restart.

And for those of you that are wondering, yes, I do have 2 modems, the "Conexant HCF 56k Data/Fax Modem (rev 08)" and the "Lucent Microelectronics 56k WinModem (rev 01)." It doesn’t matter to me which one works, just as long as one of them works.. The Conexant doesn’t show up on the modems list, it shows up under unknown devices, and it shows up as "Aztech Dell Thor - MDP3880-W(U) Data Fax Modem" and yes, it is a Dell modem. I don't have a Dell computer though. My Lucent is actually recognized as a modem. This is all of the information that I have as of yet, and I am not sure where to go with what I have so far. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
DragonM15

I can see that this is a very common problem. I too have the same result "pppd option error (exit code 2)" with my Aztech SmartLink SmartPCI562 56K Modem (rev 04). Somebody please help.

What kernel are you using?

What does your /etc/modprobe.conf file have in it? Or if you are using 2.4 kernel then its /etc/modules.conf

Are the lt_modem lt_serial modules loading? Run lsmod to see if they are loading.

Try doing a modprobe lt_modem to see if they will load without errors.

See specifics at http://www.linmodems.org/ but basically, even if you've managed to get Linux communicating with the modem port, since it is a software modem, without the 'software drivers' it isn't a fully functional modem. That site has a link to Conexant drivers for Linux at http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/ and installing this software should get your modem up and working.

Smile SmartPCI562 Works in Suse 9.2

OK, I got my modem working.
Ony had to installed the patch from Suse Downloads.
http://www.novell.com/linux/download...s/92_i386.html
I saw a patch for ltmodem too there.
I did not use the drivers from Smartlink web. My modem is with SmartPCI562 chip on Suse Linux 9.2 Pro. I only use YaST to configure. You know, I am a real Newbie not comfortable with command line yet.

Don't forget to reboot before trying to connect.

For your information I add here my dial in, modem and modprobe data

Sorry that it has taken me forever it seems, to reply to this thread.. I have been offline for quite some time. Thank all of you for your help. I have made this modem work perfectly with Slackware 10.1, however I have one quick question. Every time that I used KPPP to dialup to my internet connection, before I connect using it, I HAVE TO use the command 'dhcpcd' and then cancel the operation. If I don't then I connect at a steady 1.0 kbps. And at that, I go nowhere. Any ideas as to why i have to do this? Thanks
