Lucent LT WinModem - Detected and Configured but won't connect.

Hey folks.

I've got SuSE Linux 9.1 Pro installed. Just installed it today in fact. It picked up that I've a Lucent LT WinModem, and I inserted CD5 to install the drivers for it; so it's all configured.

But I try to connect using KInternet. I open it up, and click Dial In. I then view the log and see:

Quote:

SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.16 on linux.

Status is: disconnected
trying to connect to smpppd
connect to smpppd
Status is: disconnected
Status is: connecting
pppd[0]: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.
pppd[0]: Failed to open /dev/ttyLT0: No such device or address
Status is: disconnecting
Status is: disconnected
pppd[0] died: Serial port open failed (exit code 7)

The username, password and dial-up number are all correct.

Any help on this?

Also, I've set for the Firewall to be on. Will it automatically protect me? Do I need to configure it? Any help on this as well?

Thanks. :)

pppd[0]: Failed to open /dev/ttyLT0: No such device or address

are you sure your modem is ttyLT0 ? if it's not, you could either symlink the real device to that name (unless it already exists) or edit your config so that it uses the right device..that's my guess. that line just looks like pppd would try to open a wrong device..

I've no idea what it is supposed to be, however YaST automatically selected it as /dev/ttyLT0

Is it maybe on one of the SuSE CD's? Maybe I must be in root?

I'm able to change it if I go into YaST2; however what must I change it to? It automatically detected it as /dev/ttyLT0 so I just left it as is.

Also, all the options I can choose are:

Quote:

/dev/modem/
/dev/ACM0
/dev/ACM1
/dev/ACM2
/dev/ACM3
/dev/ttyS0
/dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS2
/dev/ttyS3
/dev/ttyLT0

This is what happened when I used ttyS0

pppd[0]: --> Re-Sending: ATM1

So, can anyone help?
Which should I use? What should I do?

Thanks :)

Can anyone help?

I've checked and the file ttyLT0 does exist; however it's 0b - empty, nothing there.

SuSE did everything for me, so did it then maybe not install this file correctly?
Should I re-install SuSE?

Any help?

Thanks :)

I'm exactly where you are. Try wvdial. I did connect once and cannot again. I get an invalid password/username

eBopBob 08-02-2004 01:01 PM

Thanks for that. I'll try it. Hopefully that will work. *fingers crossed*
I know it's doable, I know of about three or four others here with a Lucent LT WinModem who all have it working!!!

eBopBob 08-02-2004 01:30 PM

Didn't work. I typed it in Konsole and got:

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0
--> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such device or address
--> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such device or address
--> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such device or address

However I've actually been to the /dev/ folder, and can see it... so it's there. However, having said that, it's 0 bytes meaning nothing is there - it's empty. SuSE probably didn't configure and set it up correctly I'm guessing.

whats your actual modem name; the one from the lucent drivers?

edit your /etc/wvdial.conf and put in that entry

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...postid=1078650

That person there had the exact same problems as me... however now his is working. If only SuSE would've done it right in the first place! :P

I guess no one can help me?

What do you mean? I know it's a Lucent LT WinModem; but that's all the information I was able to find in Windows. The driver I'm using is the ltmodem driver which comes on CD5 of the Suse Linux 9.1 Pro edition.

I tried to edit with kedit, but it wouldn't let me. I tried to edit in root via konsole, and it wouldn't let me. Any other ways? Maybe if I enter the information manually it'll work? :-?

when you were installing the drivers, what exactly was dumped to screen? what was the referrence name? This you need to know.

eBopBob 08-04-2004 03:26 AM

What I did was, in SuSE Yast2 when I was choosing what software to install, I selected to install the ltmodem driver.

I'll boot into Linux now to check any other details I can about it. As when I installed it, nothing was shown on the screen since I did it all via YaST2 - It simply showed at the percentage of what had been installed.

I'll see if I can find anything else. If needs be, I'll uninstall the driver and install it again to see if maybe I missed something. :-?

Hi! I'm Italian, and my english is not very well!

I've the same problem about the Lucent LT Winmodem under my Linuxbox with Suse 9.1 Personal (downloaded).

Yesterday, I downloaded the new rpm ltmodem-2.6.2-38.6.i586.rpm and its patch ltmodem-2.6.2-38.6.i586.patch.rpm from the Suse's ftp.

I've installing the driver under modem (in YaST2) when at the configuring of smpppd to 66%, the system lock.
When I've rebooted the system, the modem was configured but when I start KInternet, the log report that the device /dev/ttyLT0 dosn't response.

Help me,too please!

Thx
