lspci can't find anything

I just got Mandrake 9.0 working, but graphics are too slow (guess I'm missing 3D acceleration) and couldn't configure my onboard sound.

The board is a ECS-K7SOM+ 5.1
Chipset: SiS 730D North and SiS962L South (had to open the case just to check this 'cos it's not specified in the manuals nor clearly in the web)
Onboard Sound: CMedia CMI9738 AC'97
Onboard video: embedded in SiS 730D

Had to install it on expert mode and couldn't keep a windows partition (froze every time I tried, guess it's just too intelligent ;) note: I've installed linux like 10 times, since 1996). Guess I'll plug in an old ATA66 3Gb for my pirated winbloze.

Well. I just downloaded from CMedia their linux drivers and from SiS too (exact version wasn't specified so I don't expect much)...

What I don't get is why lspci doesn't find anything. Same for scanpci  I thought linux couldn't work at all without lspci working.

If you have some suggestions/clues please tell me. I'm at work right now so I can't try anything right now but I'll do it later.

Plug'n'Play disabled in the bios?

muyo76 03-03-2003 11:19 AM

Yep tried it both ways

carlywarly 03-03-2003 12:34 PM

What happens if you run hard drake?

muyo76 03-04-2003 04:17 AM

Hard drake detects the drives. No sound, PCI etc...

Tried the CMedia drivers, but won't compile for my kernel. They say they're designed for RH7.3 ...

This mobo is a bitch. No linux drivers in the CD or in their web. Fuckers at Elitegroup...

This is the mobo (maybe too new? damnit) :
http://www.ecs.com.tw/products/pd_sp...product_id=241

The drivers I downloaded from SiS didn't work either. Crashed my Xwindows and forced me to some major configuration to get it back working as before. SiS730s was included but SiS730D wasn't. I tried anyway but nope - everything went South.

Then I tried reinstalling all over again the system (installed every package). For some reason all the games using 3D are missing. I'll try installing them manually later.

I think I'll plug an old 3.6gig HD with winbloze because I can't watch divX movies with sound and I'm misssing it ;) . Don't worry it's pirated. The only drivers working are those included in the CD and yes... only winbloze. No OS/2, no Linux, no FreeBSD, nothing...

Damn I left my nForce2 machine in Japan in my gf's basement.

Upgrade kernels... you'll find agp support for the sis730D in 2.4.20, and I think the pciid for the 9383 cmedia chipset finally got added to the cmpci.o module this last go round. You might need to bounce up to XFree 4.3.0 too, but just check on their website for info about your chipset.

Cheers,

Hmmm Mandrake 9.0 runs:
Kernel 2.4.19
XFree 4.2.1 & XFree 3.3.6
Glibc 2.2.5
GCC 3.2
KDE 3.0.3, GNOME 2.0.1, ...

You think I need to upgrade kernels? Jesus...

Thanks a lot, anyway. I'll check it out when I have the time

finegan 03-04-2003 11:16 AM

gcc, kde, and gnome don't matter in this... the hardware interaction is all kernel and Xfree... 3.3.6 is 3 years old, 4.2.1 is rather new, probably handles your chipset, so I wouldn't sweat that too much, but 2.4.19 is about 5-6 months old now, older than your chipset. The kernel releases have slowed down in the past year as a lot of work has been going on with unstable: 2.5.x. Check the changelog of 2.4.20 and .21-preX for mention of your graphics chipset... also the XFree logs. Heck they finally got the Intel GL845 to work with XFree 4.3.0 and that's been out for nearly a year. It just depends a lot on how pratty the manufacturer is and for how long.

Cheers,

Finegan

SiS730 mentioned in XFree 4.3.0
http://xfree.org/4.3.0/Status31.html#31

No mention in the latest changelogs for the Kernel. Hmmm.

Man what a pain in the ass. I'm installing my pirated winbloze in this machine for now :( :~(
