Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question Lsi 20320ie (sym 53c1030)

Hello,
I was looking for a scsi controller, which can drive my old but reliable LTO2 Ultrium tape drive in my Linux server based on CentOS8.
I bought than the LSI 20320IE U320 SCSI Controller and installed it.
With lspci, I can see, that the system was able to find it, but no driver was loaded.

With some research, I found several entries guys have familiar problems.
One of these discussions ended up with the info, that these controllers are no longer supported by the newer kernel versions.
But if I step into the configuration of the kernel scsi driver, I found infos, that the chipset SYM 53C1030 is still supported by the mpt3sas version. This is metioned, if you step into the help of the SYM53C8xx module and explicity reference to the chipset 53c1030.

I tried to load the mpt3bas, mptscsih, mptspi... but no driver works....

So, before I longer back this maybe wrong horse and didn't spent only money but time, I would like to know,
wether or not, I can fix this problem with this controller or do I need to get another controller...

Thanks in advance for any help!

Kind regards,
Juergen

It's not that it's not supported RedHat are being asshats about it, just grab a kernel source tarball of the same version as your running kernel, or if RedHat has a src rpm use that, and re-add the kernel module yourself. For some magical reason if the hardware's interface is not capable of 6GB/s or 12GB/s it magically gets dropped from support... I had this happen 3 times with different cards, the solution is to recompile the kernel and add the missing module. The Kernel itself never dropped support for the card, RedHat did.

Thumbs up

Thank you very much for your information. You're so right, I installed a new kernel and now the device is correctly recognized and working.
