lower the CPU clock frequency of AMD

Hi,
Is it possible to lower the CPU clock frequency for a AMD Athelon 2600 without having to reboot Linux (i.e. by means of a utility)?

Probably not.

Software-based solutions for over/underclocking have never really worked well for me. Is there a particular reason you don't want to reboot? I'd say that really the best thing to do would be to enter in the BIOS and change it there.

Yeah, I thought it wasn't possible.
It would be extreemly handy though, now that the heat has arrived the CPU fan starts whinning up to maximum revs and I only need all 2Ghz when I'm compiling
