Low sound alsa 82801I (ICH9 Family)
 
I have found quite a bit on this, but mostly they were No Sound, which isn't my problem, and many things were quite old, and other systems that have files that this one doesn't. I've also tried several things, found both here and elsewhere, to no avail. As well as trying out the hda-analyzer, from alsa-projects.org, which didn't help either...

System: Salix 13.0, based on Slackware 13.0

Since this is going to be a rather long post, I'm going to ask my questions first...

Should I upgrade alsa, and alsa libs?
Which lines of these commands would help to diagnose what's going on?
Should I open the unit and read the chips manually rather than trusting alsa? (The chips have heat sinks on top of them, and asking before removing them).
What would help with figuring out why Wolfenstein ET 2.60 doesn't play any sound at all? (The only things I've found were really old, but I have no problems with it on Slackware 12.2)

I have the Realtek 1200... What I do is compile alsa as a module in my kernel. Then I install the alsa-libs, alsa-utils, and alsa-headers.

I use Funtoo, so I load the startup service for alsasound. Not familiar with loading alsa on a slack box. But I think its somewhere in rc.conf


After I reboot and all modules and services are started; as root I run -

From there it seems to detect my card, then in the terminal, I launch alsamixer and raise the volume levels for PCM, FRONT, MASTER.

Then I use a volume mixer in X to adjust sound levels.

I see that the modules are installed, and you have the libs and headers installed. Check the mixer levels in alsamixer first, before any lib or header updates. Maybe update your kernel to .31, re-compile alsa modules

Try install a alsa-oss package to see if you can get sound in ET 2.60 ... I run a 64bit OS, and use OSS emulation to get sound in True-Combat.

Another is to enter a direct into your sound device try:

echo "et.x86 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss
And double check by cat'ing the file to see if it echoed correctly.

Thanks...However, I had found a fix for both of them not long ago. For some reason or another alsa didn't find the device correctly as well as there wasn't an alsa-base file in modprobe.d. Also, I couldn't find the alsa docs that were discussed often in the searches I had done...

That link explains where the documentation is as well as a little extra help.

I had tried this, and I didn't know about using cat to check it when it didn't work. However, What I found that worked was at http://nullkey.ath.cx/~stuff/et-sdl-sound/
