Unhappy low monitor res mini mac ubuntu

I read the other threads and tried various fixes. My 9.10 Ubuntu install only offers the 2 lowest resolutions for my monitor rendering it pretty useless. When I went to the xorg.conf file (using sudo)i encountered the message that now these settings are configured by the server. So the auto config is not giving the right information because this monitor worked just fine when the machine had the mac OS. I went to the intel sight for drivers for the the graphics card, Mobile Intel 945GM Express chipset, the message under Linux was that the driver is imbedded, not downloadable as a driver, and meant only for developers.

Aside from this problem the mac mini is now a slug but used to zip along just fine with OSX. I have two other ubuntu machines but they are IBM laptops. I would like to make this mini a usable linux box.

So does anyone know how I can reset the horiz and vert controls to a usable resolution...

Question intel graphics card driver

Thank you for posting the links. I had already found this driver but when i tried to install it from terminal with "make" after attempting to install it terminal ended up with missing conf file which I got and installed but the installation still ended with a missing boolean string and all of this is way over my head. But if you could set me straight on a basic question: since the driver is made for the SUSE distribution, does this mean to get this mini mac running reasonably well as a linux box I would need to change distributions and not use Ubuntu?

TIA
susan

Hmmm

This may not be a particularly useful suggestion, but had you considered trying loading Damn Small Linux (DSL) and trying the various display mode options to see if you can find one that gives you a reasonable display ?

Just a thought.
It might beg the suggestion of looking for another distribution that can support the monitor's capabilities.

C.

Question lo res solved, but still no 3-D

Thank you for your suggestion. Been using Linux for over a year but i'm still a newbie. The reason I'm trying to stay with Ububtu is because I have 3 ibm Thinkpads running Ubuntu and would like to stay with one distribution. I changed to a NEC monitor and now have acceptable resolution but no 3D rendering which is important to me. So surely I need that proprietary driver that's been released for SUSE. Can that driver be altered to work with Ubuntu? I tried unsuccessfully tried installing the tarball.
