Delete the files that are taking up space?

What is your partition scheme, how big are the partitions, and how much do you have used?

Umm, i don't know how to check for my partition. All I know that I use a command known as: df
and i get this:
gateway@gateway-desktop:~$ df -ha
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 3.8G 3.4G 173M 96% /
proc 0 0 0 - /proc
/sys 0 0 0 - /sys
varrun 126M 104K 125M 1% /var/run
varlock 126M 0 126M 0% /var/lock
procbususb 126M 72K 125M 1% /proc/bus/usb
udev 126M 72K 125M 1% /dev
devshm 126M 0 126M 0% /dev/shm
devpts 0 0 0 - /dev/pts
lrm 126M 33M 93M 27% /lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic/volatile
binfmt_misc 0 0 0 - /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc

Well, you have your system installed to a single partition which was a bad idea. You also made the partition much too small for a modern distribution (I will take a wild guess and figure you are running Ubuntu, SUSE, Fedora, or one of the other heavyweights) and your personal files (media and the like).

Your only realistic option, if you want to use this machine as a full time desktop, is to start over again from scratch with multiple and larger partitions. You should give at least 5 GB to /, and anything else you can spare to /home. That will give you enough space for pretty much any distribution out there, with room to grow.

"fdisk -l" is the command to see the overall partition setup. (You may have to run it as root--or using sudo) If you have any empty space, you can resize one or more partitions using GParted or QTParted. This is best done with a bootable CD---eg Gparted comes on a stand-alone CD, and QTparted is including in many "live CD" Linux versions.

There is nothing wrong with putting everything on one partition---as long as it is big enough....
