low cost server for home
 

I would like to build a server for home use.

It would be for the following:
IMAP for personal mail, less than 10 casual users
Apache for family use, very little traffic
user login for XP users for family files; pics, music and docs.
This may be the most demanding part, audio streaming to a laptop.

I want to use raid 1, I know me and backups may not be too frequent.
I like and an used to CentOS.

Anybody build something recently and would like to share?
I am not taking about doing $1000 box, <500 beans would be great.

Dovecot is nice as well as Squirrelmail. Kind of like Squirellmail but Dovecot is simply.

Should be no issue there.

user login for XP users for family files; pics, music and docs.
I assume you mean samba to share directories, home directories, ann printers.

This may be the most demanding part, audio streaming to a laptop.
Never done this but if mounted to a directory just run the file from there.
There are several links on audio and video network servers here. Just search around for some.

As far as the requirement. If just passing basic networking stuff then a very cheap machine will work if not doing much intense video and gaming on the machine itself.

I did not think that this of setup would be an issue.
I am kind of looking for a laundry list of hardware that will have no issues.
I will be buying in the next week and I want to see if anyone has a hareware setup they are happy with.
The server will just sit in a closet without KVM, just a network connection and a UPS.

So no keyboard, in which case you have to make sure that it will have an option to boot without KB.

No further experience that can help you.

For such light usage probably any pIII and up will do, you know something that can be had for less than a 100.
