lost sound on SuSE 9.0

I did something daft and lost Xwindows, so I went back to the
CDs and reinstalled using the update option.

This fixed everything, and now my Mesa programmes compile, but the sound vanished completely!

I am not sure if this should under hardware, if I go to Yast->Hardware->Sound

it says Number 0 is a VT8233/A/8235/AC 97 Audio controller and it has status=Running.

I hope I can fix this soon, because the kids will be MAD!
