Lost mouse -- how to restore?

I was messing with my modules.config file, and I screwed something up so that I couldn't even boot. Well, I fixed that problem, but somewhere in the process of doing that, I reconfigured my mouse such that it will not work. X starts fine, but I have no mouse.

My mouse is a USB optical two-button with a scroll wheel -- HP, not that it matters.

My system is Fedora Core 1 (Yeah, I know it's old-school, but it works -- well, used to work -- for my needs and I prefer not to mess with what works.)

I'm no newbie and I know how to boot into runlevel 1 and edit my XF86Config file. But I can't remember *how* to edit my XF86Config file to restore the USB mouse (too many years of easy installations without the need to edit that file, sadly). What goes in the mouse section?

Or is there an easier way?

Gosh, I sure feel stupid.

I guess I'll try running redhat-config-mouse and see what happens.

Near the top of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file I have the following to select which mouse is being used:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "X.org Configured"
    Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
    InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
    InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
Later in the file I have the following to describe the device:
Code:
Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Mouse0"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
    Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
    Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
EndSection
Does /dev/mouse exist on your system? I'm not sure how your kernel would see your mouse. My /dev/mouse is a link to /dev/psaux.

I just remoted in to a box at work with a USB mouse and /dev/mouse is a link to /dev/input/mice - hope that helps...

If necessary you could also rerun the program that generates ths xorg.conf (or XF86Config) file. I don't use FC4 myself, but as root just run xorgconfig (or xf86config) in a terminal session. Check the man pages for more info
