Looking to buy a small touchscreen for mobile pc any brand suggestions?

I'm in the market for a new touchscreen monitor <= 15" in size. I want to make this a mobile project, specifically a car pc so it needs to be compact but reliable. I have never used touchscreen input on Linux but have read up on it and it looks like its pretty solid nowadays.

Can anyone suggest a reputable brand that works plug-n-play or am I asking too much?

What are the negative and positive experiences if any other than 1st time setup...

VGA hookup or what kind of connection on touchscreen are you looking to buy.

ELO's are pretty linux friendly.

Might be cheaper to buy a used touchscreen laptop and install linux on it.
It is how I roll in my PU truck with a Verizon Jetpack giving me internet access on the road.

Or is this a PI project?

Connection doesn't matter (hopefully) because the M/B supports VGA, HDMI, and DVI.

This is a a mini-itx build, not Pi.

I was looking at something like this, although it is more than I would like to spend. Would like to keep it around $200 max. Might have to get it 2nd hand after all.

Main thing is plug-n-play compatibilty.

Well, Like I mentioned. ELO makes Linux drivers for their touchscreens

http://www.elotouch.com/Support/Downloads/default.asp

Quote:
Downloads

Current drivers
including related files such as utilities, demos, diagnostics, and reference/installation notes
Elo Tablet software updates
Linux pre-built drivers
Archived (unsupported) drivers
including related files such as examples and reference/installation notes
Company-specific Linux drivers
Elo PayPoint Software Development Kit

Windows XP Pro operating system licensing will be valid through 2016 on Elo TouchSystems products. As well as offering additional new OS options, support of Windows XP will continue up to 2016.

The Acoustic Pulse Recognition (APR) and Projected Capacitive touch technologies are not supported by all operating systems including Mac and some versions of Linux. See the Technology notes for each driver on the Driver and File Downloads page to verify support for your touchscreen technology.
My link shows a older model. So the part in the quote I underlined should not apply.
Usually in Linux. Older hardware has better support than newer hardware. In my expereince.
My Amrel RT 786 EX Touchscreen Toughbook works with my finger on the screen with the evdriver.
This Dell XT2 works with the wacom pen and my finger on it's touchscreen/
My M&A Companion Touchscreen 9 inch atom netbooks work with the little plastic pen or my finger on the screen on AntiX Debian Testing. With a 3.16 kernel. Intel graphics vga.

Might be more up your alley since you mentioned vesa. Vesa is mentioned in the decription.
Price is right also. Lots of ways to hook it up also.

Planar Touchscreen

@rokytnji - Thanks for the quick responses and the great info.

I guess all there is left to do is get one in my hands to play with.
