Looking at CGSecurity but BIOS can't see failed hard drive so...

I'm sorry but I have a stupid question.
My wifes 2nd hard drive failed I'm guessing physicaly by the knocking sound, wind down sound and a fail at the BIOS check.

So I have to ask, before I start looking more into this:
Since the hard drive can't even be loaded at boot how would I even get an application to recognize it?

You can't.
But exceptions do occur. Best try.

That's pretty much the case. The 'knocking' and 'winding down' sounds are caused by a physical fatal error in the drive unit (e.g. a head crashed or the motor fried), and the HDD ROM attempting to initialize it. When it can't be initialized, the HDD ROM gets stuck in an endless loop and won't talk to BIOS, or anything else.

I agree -- it's probably DOA.

Q: Does it do its "play dead" thing immediately on boot when the machine has been off & it is relatively cool?
