Logitech Quickcam IM
Has anyone got a USB Logitech Quickcam IM working on Linux (device ID: 0x46d:0x8a6). The webcam is mainly dark grey with a light grey area on top where there is a button to take instant pictures and a green LED, it also has a built in microphone. It seems to cause problems due to the microphone, on Ubuntu it switches on at start up and conflicts with the sound card, and with Damn Small Linux it says "camera" at the boot up screen for the sound card. I am looking at changing to a Linux OS that will run it, if there is one out there. There doesn't seem to be a spca driver for it and the USB devices list in the sticky thread here does not have a listing for it. Please help me, I want to get away from this dirty old Winblows but I need to have my webcam working. Thanks in advance for any assistance!!!

In essence it's not a distribution thing. Linux (the kernel, USB agent) determines what driver to load depending on the chipset if it's supported. So, first thing is to search LQ for threads about the USB Logitech Quickcam IM and check the HCL. Threads yield Logitech QuickCam Messenger and the HCL yields Logitech Quickcam Messenger. If that matches your cam you've got some reading to do.

It is not as far as I know a Quickcam Messenger, it is a Quickcam IM, and there are references to them at the spca website but they do not have the same product ID. I have searched everywhere trying to find information about this before I posted here, and posting here was my last resort. Maybe I should re-phrase a little of my first post. I am looking at changing to a Linux OS that will run it, and one that either has the drivers pre-complied or has a simple, straight-forward driver installation process. I am currently waiting for feedback from Logitech about the differences between a Messenger and IM webcam. I am not certain about the product ID I have provided, as I got it with Damn Small Linux Live CD and also a Morphix Live CD also returned the same product ID, but could there be an error with this number?

OK. No problem. If there's a driver we'll find it.

I don't know. I've seen one place listing (lsusb) the Quickcam IM as "046d:08d9 Logitech, Inc." using spca5xx. www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids lists the QuickCam IM to have product ID 08a0. Looking at http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html you see the QuickCam IM listed with four product ID's 0x08a0, 0x08a1, 0x08b9 and 0x08a6. Worth a try.
