as far as i know u need to have the right mouse plugged in when u boot up :) this isnt windows :P. I dont know if u feel like tryin a new distro but give MEPIS a shot. I've had absolutely everything work with it even my possessed printer (with a lil tweaking of course) decided to work.

O and i have an logitech optical usb mouse also :). MEPIS got it right out of the box. If you dont feel like installing the distro then burn an iso and use it its a live cd also.

Just try rebooting and see if Knoppix detects the mouse

If you have a USB-to-PS2 adapter plug, it's worth plugging your USB optical mouse
in with it, into the PS2 input, and see if it gets recognized and usable that way. That
worked for me when I couldn't get Mandrake Linux to recognize the USB mouse one
time. (Since then I made a new successful installation in which the mouse was
recognized with no trouble, plugged in as USB.)

I don't know why one install wouldn't recognize the USB mouse, and the next one recognized it perfectly without a hitch. These things are beyond me and I suspect always will be!

Maybe next time you upgrade, your mouse will work on USB too. Who knows! Anyway it's better to have it working on PS2 than dead on USB.
