Logitech mx600

I have just bought one of these to replace my old mx510 but I can't seem to get it to work.

dmesg shows a 'Logitech USB Reciever' when I plug it in and it appears to be assigned to /dev/input/event5 but there is no output from event5 when I run cat on it.

No errors in xorg.log.

I notice that the laser underneath is dark. Is this normal for laser mice? This is my first laser.

It is hard to see the laser on laser mice, usually it is an infrared laser, therefore not very visible at all, but you can still see a small bit of red light.

Have you tried running 'xorgsetup' or 'xorgcfg' ? Also, you may want to disable gpm by running 'chmod a-x /etc/rc.d/rc.gpm' if it isn't already disabled.

gpm is off as I never use it. Tried xorgsetup still no joy.

Just went and tried mouse in friends win xp laptop but not working there either.
Think all I can do is send it back now.

Well, then it could be a defect, it should work at least on Window$.

I have a laser mouse here, and I do see a small spot of red light when I look inside. Note: it's probably bad for your health to look inside the laser part of a laser mouse (really it's a low power infra-red laser, not that dangerous at all).
