Logitech Mouse: side button won't work

ok, i have a Logitech Mouse and i can't get my side button to work so i can move backward in net browsers. (i use Opera mostly and netscape when i have to....if this matters) i have managed to get the scroll wheel to work by editing the XF86Config-4 file and i have tried to change the # of buttons to 6 instead of 5 but it still doesn't work. Has anybody had this problem or know how to fix it?
