Logitech can't answer my question

so I guess I will have to turn to the experts.

I have an OLD Trackman Marble (from the days of Win NT 4) which I have been using with Ubuntu from 6.04 - 9.10. At 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768 resolution it was quite snappy. At 1280 x 1024 it was getting a little long in the tooth. Too much motion of the ball to navigate around the higher resolution screen.

So now I have 2 monitors 1280 x 1024 and 1680 x 1050. I finally had to retire the Trackman and substitute the $3 mouse which came with the system. With the Trackman I had mouse sensitivity turned all the way down and acceleration all the way up. With the cheap mouse the settings are almost the reverse.

And the question is... Does the newer Trackman Wheel have more (resolution, DPI or whatever) to handle modern high resolution displays?

The response from Logitech "technical support" was
Quote:
A Trackball do not have DPI( Dots per second ) for it just uses a ball. With regards to your inquiry, I'm afraid that Trackman Wheel is also the same as Trackman Marble for they both uses ball.
Hope to hear from someone who actually uses the newer item.

Regards,

Ken

If it were me I'd escalate at Logitech. The answer shows that they didn't understand your question and that they likely don't really speak English so never will understand it.

I sent my message back with clarification
Quote:
This does not at all answer my question. Granted DPI is not strictly applicable to track ball devices. However, I have an OLD Logitech Clear Case mouse. It was made in the days when an 800 x 600 monitor was a $1000+ proposition. If I connect it to my current system with two 1680 x 1050 monitors I would have to move it more than a foot to get from one side to the other. A "modern" mouse, even the cheapest one which comes bundled with a bargain PC, will zoom across both screens with a slight movement. It obviously has more (something) than the old 200 DPI Clear Case.

I want to know if the current Trackman Wheel has more (resolution, dots per turn of the ball or whatever) than my OLD Trackman Marble which I purchased back when Windows NT 4 was current. My Trackman Marble requires too much movement of the ball to navigate my current high resolution monitors. I want to know if it is worth purchasing a Trackman Wheel.
and I got this back in reply
Quote:
I've just consulted one of our tier 2 and it appears that the Marble and the Wheel are almost the same and just vary on the location of the ball (the marble has the trackball on the center while the wheel on the thumb.) and I'm afraid that you'll just need to adjust the mouse pointer speed via the control panel.
The OLD Trackman Marble has the ball on the left - to be operated by the thumb of the right hand. I had to supply the part #, model #, serial # of the device when I submitted the question. Obviously they did not even identify the correct product.

So I think I will escalate this to Wally World (aka Walmart). They have the item listed Site-to-store for about $28. I will give it a try and if it does not work return it. I do not feel to bad about doing this with (to?) Walmart. I ordered a Dane-Elec 2 GB SD card from their "Site-to-Store". $4.54 with free shipping. The SD card, on a 3 1/2" x 5" cardboard blister pack was shipped FedEx to the store in a 9" x 12" x 4 1/2" box If they can afford to do that they can afford to eat a returned Trackman if it doesn't work to my satisfaction. Besides, I buy enough from them and since Sam Walton passed away they have not spent any money on customer service.

What was the question again?

Ken

p.s. I really don't have the Clear Case Mouse anymore. At least I cannot find it. It was in fact CLEAR and you could see all the inner workings. Really quite neat.

p.p.s. Wallyworld.com raised (corrected) the price on the SD card to $7.54 after I received my order

So I answered my own question - I purchased a Trackman Wheel. It has enough resolution to comfortably navigate my two monitors.
