Lockup! Did I just get hacked?

MY machine just locked up. Gimp had 6 images open, editing, and FF had 2 pages open.

When I rebooted, my FF browsing history library was wiped clean, back to 05/15.

Is there a log file that will give any info here? Anybody ever seen anything like this?

edit:
It's looking like my system just did a 'System Restore', to how it was 2 weeks ago.

Earlier this morning, for example, I moved 1,700 pictures from one file, into another file, for X-screensaver GLSlideshow. I installed X-screensaver too.

Both changes are UNDONE, and I wonder what else I'll find here...

query,

Had the machine been running since 5/15 without reboot?

Maybe you booted from an RO image (CD or something) on 5/15 and didn't notice?

Look in /var/log/ and see if you have ANY logs for the last few days.

I shut down and started daily since 05/15.

It was EXACTLY as if it had restored to an earlier time. Even deleted 'trashed' files from last week were back on the desktop.

But NOW, it's BACK to how it was. ??? Including the browse history library. I took a screen pic of the mystery library, right after the crash - see below.

I just booted XP on the other partition, and all was OK. I rebooted Ubuntu, and the interrupted FF pages were ready to re-load.

And the cookie from this thread, and similar threads THAT I just started in Ubuntuforums, and Linuxforums, for this lockup, WERE ALSO GONE.

I do not know where to look in syslog files to find the answer.

???

'/var/log/syslog' and messages, check those for logs of system activity.
