Loading RedHat 9

I am loading Red Hat 9 and would like some insight on how to partition the hard drive. I have no experience with the operating sys. How can I Partition it so that it is efficient. I have a 40 gig scsi.

If I may ask, why are you installing Red Hat Linux 9?

To answer your question if this 40 gig scsi hard drive is blank let RHL9 do the partitioning for you.

Software that I am installing requires that I use RHL9 or RHEL. I am installing web filtering software called smartfilter bess used to be n2h2.

Since you sound committed to using RHL9, be sure to look into using fedoralegacy.org for post End of Life RHL9 security and critical bug fix errata packages.

I just updated an old RHL9 installation that already had all official RedHat updates applied and was very impressed with the number of updates available at fedoralegacy.org, including a kernel update.

Also, they have a version of yum for use with RHL9 that makes updating very pleasant: http://download.fedoralegacy.org/red...acy.noarch.rpm

Then please consider using something like CentOS instead. CentOS is based on RHEL and is actively supported (indirectly by Red Hat and directly by the fine folks at CentOS). CentOS-3.7 (2.4 kernel based and RHL9 like) and CentOS-4.3 (2.6 kernel based) are the latest available;

Like the Fedora Legacy support for RHL9, CentOS does make use of yum for updates/installation.
