loading pictures from digital camera
 

I have a with HP Photosmart 733 digital camera. How can I use and download pictures from it in Knoppix and Ubuntu. It has a memory card in it and internal memory in the camera. It plugs into the computer at a usb port. I have many usb ports. I do not know if I would need to know which usb port it is plugged into when mounting it.

Under Ubuntu - plug the camera in and see what happens. There is a very good chance it will just work automagically :) The same should be true of knoppix.

Chances are you'll get a popup dialog asking if you want to transfer your photos over (Y/n). have fun.

If your camera has multiple modes, you could try setting "PTP" if nothing happens under "normal" mode.

In general, linux sees most cameras a an external storage device with the vfat file system. With the 2.4.xx kernels you would have to mount the camera as if it were a usb drive, and you had a bit of a job finding the usb device it got asigned to. Under the 2.6 kernels it is all handled for you.

It dosn't matter which usb port you use.

I had plugged it in before and tried again. It did not work. I found. My two options for USB Configuration are Digital Camera (Camera appears as an imaging device when connected to a computer.) and Disk Drive (Camera appears as a disk drive when connected to a computer. (MSDC)). I am about to try Disk Drive. The camera was already set to Digital Camera (PTP).I can see my camera in Knoppix when I goto K-menu>Utilities>Tools>USB View.

Your kernel should support usb hotplugging just fine. You may have to manually mount the "usb disk" (vfat) your camera will look like. I don't know how knoppix handles these things... it may automount it read-only for instance. You can look for it in the tail of dmesg.
