load module *.ko

I am getting the error eth0: unknown interface: no such device. There is nothing in lsmod, so I was going to load the module of my card 3c589_cs, but the only file I can find is 3c589_cs.ko, which won't load. Can I convert or compile this to a .o file? Do I need to? Thanks for any thoughts.

I am running vector linux 2.6.7-ide4 on a very old laptop

If you are trying to load the module with: insmod 3c589_cs.ko or modprobe 3c589_cs.ko, that won't work.

The rule is: when loading modules, give the module name without the extension. Drop the .ko extension, and try loading the module like this: insmod 3c589_cs or modprobe 3c589_cs.

When I tried that I get "insmod: can't read '3c589_cs': No such file or directory" or "cs." And I am at the folder where this file resides. So do I need to compile the ko file to a o file or something of that sort? Thanks again
