Lite-On DVD+/-RW Drive Won't read CDs

Hey guys & gals,

This isn't really a linux-specific hardware question, but I have a LiteOn DVD-RW SHW-1635S that won't read or write CDs, both under Linux and Windows. It won't recognize Blank CDs, burned CDs, or normal CDs, but works fine with Blank, burned, and normal DVDs.

The drive had worked fine up until today when it messed up burning something (it was either a buffer underrun or power calibration error- didn't pay much attention at the time). I have tried shutting down the machine, d/c power supply and rebooting to no avail. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the laser for reading/writing CD media has died, it happens, sorry.

Gah. Anyway to test/confirm this?

Thanks again.

You have done all that you can, it does not work in multiple OS's even after a cold boot.

Combo drives are cheap, they can be found for less the $30.00;
