listening to cd's/recording cd's

My sound card is working properly (I was able to hear the sample sound in the sound card detection program), but I am not able to listen to CD's. I have a Toshiba 16X DVD drive, and a sony 12x cdrw drive.
I tried using both but no sound comes out. The os does recognize the dvd and cdrw drives, it's just not able to reproduce music from the cd's.

Also, I wanted to record a cd from my dvd drive to my cdrw drive, but the cd recording utility that comes with this version of linux (redhat 9) doesn't recognize my dvd drive.

Can anyone help? Any enlightenment will be highly appreciated.
thanks in advance.

I've got some bad news. You can't mount audio cds on a Linux system. This is a major setback for a desktop, but I have to believe it's being worked on.

I'm not a RedHat user so I could be wrong here, but I think I remember reading that the company began facing licensing issues with certain media types, which could have something to do with your dvd drive not showing up trying to burn. What burning utility are you using?

fragglehorn, thanks for your reply; apparently from what I've heard, redhat does play music cd's, depending on the GUI used. GNOME is supposed to play them, but alas, I am running GNOME and still no luck. I read that other read ¨DVD drive - plays cd's - not playing dvd's¨, and it says there that the analog cable has to be connected from the cd or dvd drive to the sound card... I did that... still no luck. The cd player utility actually plays the cd, (you can see the tracks playing their time), but the problem is, no sound comes out. I can play any sound file, except audio CD's.

Ok I'm done with that problem, and on to the next one: I was able to play audio CD's with the XMMS media player, but not with any of the other players bundled with redhat. Now the problem is different. The sound only comes from one of my speakers (i have four and a subwoofer). Any ideas? thanks

After fiddling around with my speaker connectors I am now able to hear the two front speakers... I don't suppose I'll be able to hear the other two...

cd audio is usually just stereo, so it only plays out of 2 speakers. Mine does the same thing and used to windows when it was on my computer.
