LIRC and 2.6.3

Hi, I've been trying for quite a while now to get the StreamZap remote to work with lirc, and kernel 2.6.3. Some resources say it's impossible because of the kernel version, some say I have to patch the kernel (which I've done three or four times, unsuccessfully), some say that it's easy as pie but don't explain it...

Does anyone have a good HOWTO on the subject? Or perhaps a walkthrough of some sort? I'm getting really frustrated with it all :-/ I've emerged lirc with
Code:
emerge lirc
I've used
Code:
patch -p1 </some/file/
numerous times, and I've tried loading the lirc_it87 module, only to receive
Code:
FATAL: Error inserting lirc_it87 (/lib/modules/2.6.3-gentoo-r1/kernel/drivers/char/lirc/lirc_it87.ko): No such device or address
.
Right now, I haven't the faintest what I haven't tried, or what to do....anyone have any success? Is there a good HOWTO somewhere?? :-/

Thanks!
Chris

Streamzap and linux are a dead end.

Software was developed (see the streamzap project on sourceforge) as a patch for
lirc 0.7.0pre2 w/ linux-2.4.

It hasn't been integrated into lirc, made to work w/ linux-2.6 and probably never will.

If you must run linux-2.6, I suggest you get an infrared wireless keyboard and teach that to a universal remote.
