Linux Wireless Printer

Well...I think this goes here. I'm looking to buy a wireless printer that is Linux compatible. My laptop has Fedora 11 on it. My dad's Vista. Anybody have a recommendation on a cheap wireless printer? I was considering a Lexmark Z2420, but I didn't see anything on their website about Linux drivers. If I can't find one, I may try setting up a printing server with an old computer.

A lot of us have been reporting that Lexmark would be at the bottom of the list in terms of Linux support.

There is some consensus that the best Linux support is from HP.

Why bother with wireless? Wherever your wireless access point is, you can have a router (perhaps you do already). Simply get a regular network printer, plug it into the router, and off you go. My reasoning is that there will be more choices if you don't need wireless-----but I'm often wrong...

Lexmark printers are crap because they are not reliable. There are better brands. Brother are cheap and reliable. I strongly recommend laser printers because they are more reliable than ink printers. Ink printers may be cheap and good value at the time that you bought it, but it will soon burn a hole in your wallet. Setting up a printer on a wireless network even with encryption is still there is a huge chance that the printer will spit out pages with out your permission. If your wireless router has virtual LAN use that to separate who can print and who can not.

You just need a printer that connects directly to a wired network. Your wireless router should have a wired network included. A wired network will make accessing your printer more reliable. Setting up a printer with wireless networks is not reliable. A printer that is not reliable, you will never use it and it then becomes a waste of money.

My Brother HL-5140 is a reliable laser printer. It is a monochrome printer. If you want a color printer, Brother HL-4040cdn seems good since it did well in a cnet review. The price is very good for a color laser printer that did well in review.

Some HPs are crap

I recently bought and then promptly returned the HP 3050 All-in-one wireless printer. It worked with usb. However, the wireless did not work in the least. I updated HPLIP from the official cite and even called HP support waiting on the phone for hours to talk unofficially to someone about Linux. This is still a bit sour in my mouth, but some fault was in my research.

Found one

So, after much research; I finally clicked checkout. I bought a new printer to use with Linux. I choose a Samsung ML-2525W black and white laser printer with wired, wireless (b,g), and usb connection. Just got it today from newegg—payed $94. I plugged in the power and Ethernet cables, and hit the power button. Then I went to my computer and added a new network printer where ubuntu easily found the WL-2525W. It added flawlessly and printed first try. I then logged into the web-based interface and setup the wireless through my network. Again, it was a flawless process and continued working. So, if you are looking for a wireless printer and don't care about color or multifunction this may be an option for you.
