linux video grabber

Hi there,
I need to connect one camera through USB to my machine which runs on Red Hat Linux.Please tell me how can i get the data from camera and how can i get the required software and is it require any additional hardware, if require what is that.

I think mencoder would do your job.
       Encode from a tuner (specify a format with -vf format):
       mencoder -tv driver=v4l:width=640:height=480 tv:// -o tv.avi -ovc raw
I am learning how to use it at this moment. (lengthy man page..) If you think you can use it, can you post mini-how-to here.

If it's minidv you're working with, you can capture it with Kino in various different formats, then do whatever you like with the footage.
