Linux Tape drive LTO3 (IBM)

i am using RHEL 5 on IBM-P series having IBM Tape drive LTO3. I can backup small size of file/s. but when i try to backup file/files with larger size it stops working.
even i have changed the tape cartrage (disk). but still in trouble.
Code:
root# mt -f /dev/st0 status

SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x44 (no translation).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (41010000):
BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN
Code:
# tar cvf /dev/st0 /etc

tar: Removing leading `/' from member names

/etc/

/etc/DIR_COLORS

/etc/issue.net

/etc/csh.login

/etc/pam_pkcs11/

/etc/pam_pkcs11/pkcs11_eventmgr.conf

/etc/pam_pkcs11/pam_pkcs11.conf

/etc/scrollkeeper.conf

/etc/NetworkManager/

/etc/gdm/modules/AccessKeyMouseEvents

tar: /dev/st0: Cannot write: Input/output error

tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

There are (hexadecimal) errors in log file (/var/log/messages) and on console

Code:
Jun 14 18:50:44 Mars kernel: ipr: 000003D0: 594A0900 00008000 D0001010 00000000

Jun 14 18:50:44 Mars kernel: ipr: 000003E0: 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000

Jun 14 18:50:50 Mars kernel: st0: Current: sense key: Unit Attention

Jun 14 18:50:50 Mars kernel: Additional sense: Power on, reset, or bus device reset occurred
I didn't found comprehensive tutorial on linux tape .

Have you tried using a cleaning tape? If it generally seems to work, but cannot do sustained data transfers without errors, that could be what you need.

You don't have time stamps on your tar sequence. Do the errors in the log correspond in time to when the cannot write error occurred with tar?
