Linux Surveillance systems

I would like to install a surveillance system from my barn to my house. I have used linux based distros for some time. Currently using ubuntu. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Need four cameras. Wifi or wireless. Audio and video. Color and Infrared. Not sure if I want a PC or DVR interface. I am very interested in supporting hardware outfits that support open source (FOSS). The barn is located four hundred feet away from the house. No problem with line of sight.

I'm getting too old to drag my behind up to the barn in the middle of the night when newborns arrive.

Actually that thread covers software mainly. I am interested in an actual hardware configuration that would work in my situation. 2.4 ghz doesn't seem to be a good option so far.

for a simple single camera, even a simple tv tuner or video capture card like a hauppauge wintv and an off the shelf camcorder in a waterproof enclosure would work, the only issue being distance for either cables OR wifi, you may need directional antennas or some other setup or signal repeaters
as for software vlc can record continously
there is also software that adds motion sensitivity

Hi,

'X10' might be the way to go. Look at 'X10 (industry standard)'.

Since you are line of sight then a separate system in the barn to handle the jobs might be the way. A Single board system (embed) could be used to control a simple camera & audio setup along with other peripheral equipment.

You have to remember that the system & components would need to be shielded & contained within a controlled environment. The barn atmosphere is not the best environment for electronics of any kind. I've been thinking of placing a system in my barn. The urine alone is a big caustic factor. Horse piss will eat into anything. I'm sure other animals have the same issue.

My distance is about the same as you specified. I was thinking of a microwave link or even a differential TR/RX system but right now I've got bigger things to catch up on around here. Another way is to bury a Ethernet cable for communication. Or even a simple wireless link might suit by using a directional antenna between the house and barn.

I've been laid up for the past 3 years and things have backed up a bit. So that project is low on the priority list.
