Linux Software Raid 5???

I wanted to findout from some of you Experts out there if Linux software RAID 5 is something that you can really depend on in a production enviroment . I know most people typically use Hardware RAID including myself but this is one these cases where I really need to help a small private school cut cost while at the sametime have a reliable server in place with RAID 5 that won't break the bank!!!

The distro of choice with be Mandrake 10

We use it at work in a few backup machines and I'm pushing for it to get used more. But its more then stable, mdadmin and the newer raidtools are awesome, you can daemonize event checking, its solid, probably preferable to hardware raid even compared to monster good cards like the LSI Megaraid or the 3ware 9k series.

Do not get any less than a dual processor motherboard because RAID 5 will hog a CPU.
